Liturgy of the Word for Children is designed for
3 to 7 year old children and is held in the St. Joseph’s room,
which is located in the basement of the church. Each week during the
school year, at the beginning of the 9:00 a.m. Mass, our celebrant
invites the children to come forward and participate in this special
liturgy.
After a listening poem and prayer, the children hear the Gospel at
a level which is easier for them to understand. The children then
retell the Gospel story and talk about their personal experiences
and how they relate to the story they just heard. Hands-on activities
are also a vital part of the program and help the children make the
Gospel story their own. Each lesson concludes with a closing prayer
or the children offering their own prayer petitions. The children
are then brought back to rejoin their parents at Mass prior to communion.
This is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the teachings
of Jesus in a format they can understand. They’re so eager to
share their thoughts, and it’s amazing to hear how much they
really know about their religion and the world around them!
An extra pair of hands to help with weekly class projects (or, if
you prefer, teaching a class) is always welcome. No experience is
necessary – just a passion for bright, smiling faces! |
